This inspired adaptation of Albert Simonin’s série noire novel was a game changer in 1950s French cinema. Its success relaunched the career of Gabin and redefined the French gangster movie. In Becker’s humanist vision, rather than hold up banks the gangsters meet friends, drink champagne and watch dancers (including a superb Moreau) in Montmartre nightclubs.
