Mike Leigh’s spellbinding depiction of Gilbert and Sullivan preparing their new production, The Mikado.
Dir Mike Leigh
With Jim Broadbent, Allan Corduner, Ron Cook, Wendy Nottingham, Lesley Manville, Timothy Spall.
Mike Leigh surprised everyone with this sumptuous study of the private lives of Gilbert and Sullivan as they prepare. The Mikado for its opening night. Timothy Spall casts a spell as the D’Oyly Carte opera company actor who sums up the futility of artistic endeavour as ‘laughter, tears, curtain’, while Jim Broadbent’s perfectionist Gilbert and Allan Corduner’s sybaritic Sullivan lead a superb company whose work becomes a wider metaphor of the creative process.
Please note: this film contains white actors playing East Asian characters.
