Ozu’s timeless classic about an elderly couple visiting their grown-up children remains emotionally powerful.
Dir Yasujiro Ozu
With Chishu Ryu, Chiyeki Higashiyama, Setsuko Hara
An elderly country couple visit their grown-up children in Tokyo, but find most of them preoccupied with work and the trappings of postwar city life. Though loosely based on Leo McCarey’s Make Way for Tomorrow, Ozu’s masterpiece feels entirely characteristic of his wry, wise response to the vicissitudes of modern family life; it builds, calmly but unflinchingly, to a coda of enormous poignancy.
