Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel published two years earlier, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in a small town in 1930s Alabama and follows the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white girl. The trial causes a divide among some of the townspeople with repercussions for Atticus Finch, the lawyer who defends him, and his family. This much-loved title lost out to Lawrence of Arabia at the Oscars® – stiff competition indeed.
