Three Crowns of the Sailor

Les trois couronnes du matelot

Surrealist yarns from Chilean filmmaker Raoul Ruiz.

France 1983
Directed by Raoul Ruiz
With Jean-Bernard Guillard, Philippe Deplanche, Nadège Clair
Running time 122min
Certificate 15

Chilean filmmaker Raoul Ruiz was born of a ship’s captain and a schoolteacher – which sounds like one of the surrealist yarns that make up Three Crowns of the Sailor. It’s like The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, romantically overblown by Orson Welles and mordantly undermined by Luis Buñuel.

This screening will be introduced by Jonathan Romney.
