John Carpenter’s terrifying – and supremely gory – film sees a parasitic extra-terrestrial force on the rampage in an Antarctic research base. Not knowing who is hosting this ‘thing’, and horrified at the destruction it can wreak, the researchers fall prey to paranoia and suspicion. Much of Morricone’s score was unused due to Carpenter’s preference for his own synth-based music, but both work well in this horror classic.
