Perhaps the finest of numerous collaborations between actor Russell and director Carpenter, this synthesis of horror and sci-fi is set in a research unit in Antarctica, whose occupants find themselves pitted against a shapeshifting alien. Bearing only a little resemblance to its 1951 source, The Thing from Another World, Carpenter’s film features stunning special effects and a scintillating synth score.
