Hitchcock cleverly cast Grant as a penniless charmer who may or may not have murderous intent.
Dir Alfred Hitchcock
With Cary Grant, Joan Fontaine, Cedric Hardwicke, Nigel Bruce
Building on the fact that many of Grant’s lighter roles often have an enigmatic, darker side to them, Hitchcock cast him as a penniless charmer who may or may not have murderous intent towards his wealthy new wife. Although Grant’s casting was a masterstroke, it may also have cost Hitchcock the ending that he wanted when RKO imposed their own.
