Studying the Superhero: a GCSE Study Day
Fri 2 Mar 2018 10:30 – 15:30
NFT1, BFI Southbank
This event is intended for teachers and students only.
The Superhero film genre is the 2018 examined topic for Eduqas Film Studies Paper 1: Exploring Film. This interactive study day has a structured exam focus analysing film language using a range of contemporary superhero extracts to explore genre codes and conventions including hybridisation. The day will provide specification-focused academic study but will also be interactive and activity based, exploring a range of contemporary texts from within an intertextual historical context. If available, a guest speaker from the industry will balance the academic input with anecdotal accounts and an overview of their understanding of the genre from an institutional perspective.
The marketing and audience appeals of superhero films will be approached using resource materials including websites, social media, reviews, magazine covers, posters and DVD covers while creative design and annotation tasks will link with storyboarding, homepage design, posters and magazine covers. A superhero feature film will be screened in the afternoon and a resource pack for teachers and students will be available on the day.
