A Lithuanian woman moves to Italy and marries an Italian who takes her to Stromboli, a volcanic island off the north coast of Sicily. Despite his claims that it will be idyllic, she finds the place barren and the locals less than friendly. Bergman and Rossellini’s burgeoning romance threatened to overshadow Stromboli on its release, but the film has since become a classic in its own right.
