As a family gathers for its annual commemoration of the death (12 years earlier) of the eldest son, tensions between various members are raised further by the arrival of the person he saved from drowning (now aged 25). Kore-eda’s most Ozu-like film is a subtly perceptive study of generational differences in beliefs and values, particularly regarding responsibility, shame and blame.
