A delicate, sensitive, but sharply insightful study of a family’s enduring grief and anger at the death of a son.
Dir Hirokazu Kore-eda
With Hiroshi Abe, Yui Natsukawa, Kirin Kiki, You
Arguably Kore-eda’s finest achievement, this film sees a family come together to commemorate the death of a son 12 years earlier; tensions are exacerbated by a visit from a young man linked to the son’s demise. Sharp insights – both social and psychological – combine with a subtle, sensitive storytelling style (often reminiscent of Ozu’s) to create one of the great modern films about family life.
