Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Pialat’s screen version of a novel by the great French Catholic writer Georges Bernanos is far earthier in style than the austere adaptations made by Robert Bresson (Diary of a Country Priest, Mouchette). Depardieu plays a tormented rural priest who attempts to save the soul of a young murderess.
