Whoopi Goldberg shines in her role as Deloris, a nightclub singer who poses as a nun and choir member after she witnesses a mob killing and is placed on a witness protection programme. She uses her musical talent to elevate the choir, but a proposed visit from the Pope converges with the appearance of the mobsters she is hiding from. Unsurprisingly, mayhem ensues. A huge commercial and critical success, it led to a sequel and hit stage musical.
