Karan Kandhari’s darkly funny feminist fable is a wonderfully unpredictable film, accompanied by an eclectic and irresistible soundtrack. Fresh from their arranged marriage, Uma moves into her husband’s cramped one-room home in Mumbai. It is an awkward start; she’s not the domestic wife he might have hoped for, while he is meek and more interested in boozing than engaging with her. Disillusioned with her new life, Uma finds independence by venturing out into the city. However, she starts to experience symptoms of a mysterious feral illness that she cannot shake off. Kandhari’s vibrant and ornate symmetrical compositions have attracted comparisons to Wes Anderson, yet Sister Midnight is cool original. It operates on its own frequency, thrillingly rebelling against convention, much like its heroine Uma – portrayed by the terrific Radhika Apte, who combines charm with a gift for physical comedy.
