Jonathan Demme’s film of Thomas Harris’ novel centres on the battle of wits between FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Foster) and imprisoned serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) as she tries to enlist his aid in profiling and discovering the whereabouts of homicidal maniac ‘Buffalo Bill’. Notwithstanding the grim subject matter, Demme deploys restraint in dealing with the killings, opting instead for old-fashioned edge-of-your-seat suspense.

A new edition of the BFI Film Classic is available from 7 Oct in the BFI Shop.

The screening on Wednesday 3 November will feature a pre-recorded intro by Professor Yvonne Tasker, author of The Silence of the Lambs: BFI Film Classics.
