+ intro by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-large
Charles Mingus soundtracks this film about lives and love in 50s New York.
Dir John Cassavetes
With Lelia Goldoni, Ben Carruthers, Hugh Hurd
Days and nights in the New York lives of two African-American jazz musicians and their sister provoke tensions – racial, professional and familial. The edgy mood as the trio navigate their way through seedy dives, pretentious parties, sexual encounters and so forth is enhanced by the moody, bluesy jazz of Charles Mingus and saxophonist Shafi Hadi.
