Shadow of a Doubt
Hitchcock’s tale of a young woman beginning to wonder whether her favourite uncle might have a dark side…
Joseph Cotten, Teresa Wright, MacDonald Carey, Patricia Collinge
USA 1943. 108min
One of Hitchcock’s finest American films, this finds ‘the Merry Widow murderer’ (Cotten) taking refuge in his sister’s home; will his adoring niece (Wright) realise that her handsome, kindly uncle might be a killer? The film offers an astute depiction of small-town American life, and Truffaut – a great Hitchcock fan – admired its psychological subtlety and resonance and its imaginative casting.
