One of Hitchcock’s finest American films, this finds ‘the Merry Widow murderer’ (Cotten) taking refuge in his sister’s home; will his adoring niece (Wright) realise that her handsome, kindly uncle might be a killer? The film offers an astute depiction of small-town American life, and Truffaut – a great Hitchcock fan – admired its psychological subtlety and resonance and its imaginative casting.
