Adapted from Robin Maugham’s novel, Losey’s first collaboration with Harold Pinter centres on the power shifts in the increasingly fraught relationship between an indolent, wealthy London toff (Fox), his new manservant (Bogarde) and the women in their respective lives. As shot by Douglas Slocombe, the lavish mansion that is the main arena of their conflict says much about class, connivance, complicity and control.
