This adaptation of Rumer Godden’s novel (with a script co-written by Godden) takes place in the closing years of the Raj and follows the life and loves of a group of young women growing up Bengal. Jean Renoir’s first colour film, made with assistance from Satyajit Ray, was shot in glorious Technicolor and filmed entirely on location. It garnered many festival awards and remains one of his most popular films.
