Set in London’s East End, this atmospheric slice of realism is adapted from a novel by Arthur La Bern and follows the desperate plight of Rose, a married woman whose former lover returns but is now on the run and looking for help. Robert Hamer, one of the great British directors, excels with this convincing portrayal of East End life and a woman divided between loyalty and passion.
