Ford’s western, acclaimed by many as his greatest, follows Wayne’s racist civil war veteran on his obsessive years-long quest to find and kill both the Comanche who abducted his niece and the girl herself (whom he considers tainted). A troubled and troubling film, notable for its magnificently expressive use of Monument Valley landscapes, it influenced many later movies, including Taxi Driver.
