On a photography shoot in modern Ghana, Mona (Ogunlano), an African-American fashion model, is transported into the body of an enslaved woman on a Louisiana sugar plantation in the early 19th century. A striking tale of resistance and rebellion, Sankofa is the best-known film by director and scholar Haile Gerima, whose work on how to decolonise the gaze has influenced a generation of filmmakers.
