Big screen classics

Hitchcock’s most experimental film has two murderers audaciously concealing their victim’s corpse at a dinner party.

Image from Rope

USA 1948
Dir Alfred Hitchcock
With James Stewart, John Dall, Farley Granger, Cedric Hardwicke
Certificate PG

Having murdered a friend and hidden him in a trunk, two gay students welcome guests – including their professor (Stewart) – to dinner, smug in the belief their crime will go unnoticed... Notable for its technical virtuosity (it was assembled from uncut 10-minute takes, invisibly edited together), the film has Hitchcock slyly pushing viewers to side – through his use of suspense – with the arrogant, amoral killers.

Also available on BFI Player.

The screening on Wed 11 Dec will be introduced by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-large.
