Quentin Tarantino’s audacious feature debut was an important moment for American independent cinema in the 90s, bringing a fresh blend of stylised violence, pop culture references and non-linear storytelling. Following a failed jewellery shop heist, a group of men find themselves holed up in a warehouse as they try to get to the bottom of what went wrong. Perhaps the film’s language and violence was too much for Academy voters, but Tarantino made up for the loss with his follow-up, Pulp Fiction.
