Laughton delivers a powerful performance as the Dutch painter whose work went unappreciated during his lifetime. Though this biopic failed to replicate the success of Henry VIII, its depth and complexity make it one of the finest portraits of artistic temperament ever produced. The magnificent sets, designed by Korda’s brother Vincent, are superbly filmed by French cinematographer Georges Périnal.
