For what would become an iconic youth movie, Nicholas Ray conducted extensive research to gain a better understanding of why kids from comfortable middle-class families might end up in trouble. While his precise, discreetly expressionist direction speaks volumes, it’s the directness of the three lead performances – especially that of the Method-influenced Dean – which provides the film’s emotional power and authenticity.
