An injured veteran, armed only with a barrel organ and a medal acknowledging his military service, struggles to find his place in a post-war landscape. Steeped in warm, beautifully restored sepia tones and displaying an emotional pathos rarely seen in a Haneke film, the steady disillusionment of a man broken by state violence is captured with equal amounts of compassion and fury. Branko Samarovski’s performance anchors the tragedy with heart-wrenching depth.
