Hitchcock’s brilliant adaptation of a short story by Cornell Woolrich has a photojournalist (Stewart) confined to his apartment with a broken leg; reduced to observing his neighbours, he begins to suspect a murder may have been committed. The film succeeds as a mystery-thriller, a portrait of psychological anxiety, and a reflection on voyeurism and cinematic storytelling, with the constricted setting skilfully turned to advantage.
