Arguably Altman’s artiest film (even down to the casting), this sci-fi parable envisages an apocalyptic ice age: a seal trapper (Newman) and his wife enter a desolate city and encounter a group of people playing a mysterious game, the stakes being life and death. An ambitious, deeply atmospheric examination of hope, faith and despair, distinguished by fine performances and Jean Boffety’s superb camerawork.
