Keira Knightley brings a youthful charm and vibrancy to Austen’s most beloved heroine, in this swooningly romantic adaptation from Atonement director Joe Wright. When a rural town becomes the new home of a wealthy, eligible young man, it causes a stir amongst the female population. But it is his aloof best friend whose presence ignites controversy, butting heads with the sharp tongued, kind-hearted Elizabeth. Surrounded by an unruly gaggle of sisters, an overbearing mother and the weight of impending poverty, Elizabeth struggles to keep her family’s reputation and prospects intact. Wright’s adaptation offers a realism and lived-in quality to Austen’s trademark social satire, with a stellar cast and crackling chemistry throughout. The clench of a hand has never felt so heart wrenching.
