The Possession of Joel Delaney
Waris Hussein’s psychological horror-chiller has an arthouse sensibility.
The only available 35mm print of this film has faded badly to pink and is too poor to screen. We will therefore screen from a DigiBeta tape.
Dir Waris Hussein
With Shirley MacLaine, Perry King, David Elliott
A year before The Exorcist, Hussein delivered this chiller about demonic possession. He did some extensive research into cases of possession and even attended exorcism rituals to create an authentic feel. The grimy, claustrophobic New York backdrop ups the tension quotient, and the brooding performances of all the cast (especially MacLaine) add up to a well-regarded psychological horror crossed with an art-house sensibility.
