Sometimes described as a box-office disappointment (though it did make a substantial profit), Altman’s live-action musical tribute to EC Segar’s comic strip is a creative marvel, thanks to Jules Feiffer’s sassy, sophisticated script, Harry Nilsson’s witty songs, superb cinematography and design, and uniformly terrific performances by brilliantly cast actors. Williams and Duvall, especially, play Popeye and Olive Oyl to perfection.
