Bergman’s masterpiece explores the fraught relationship that develops between a chatty nurse and her charge – an actress who has abandoned speech – during the latter’s convalescence in a remote island cottage. The performances are extraordinary, Sven Nykvist’s monochrome camerawork superb, and Bergman’s handling of the elusive narrative assured, audacious and inventive. Rich in ambiguities and insights, it’s often cited as one of the greatest films ever made.
