France/USA 2007
Dir Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud
With the voices of Chiara Mastroianni, Catherine Deneuve, Gena Rowlands
97min

English subtitles
Certificate 12A

Adapted from Satrapi’s acclaimed autobiographical graphic novel, Persepolis hilariously recounts Satrapi’s progress from childhood in pre-revolutionary Iran to rebellious, punk-loving youth in Europe. The striking fluent lines and black-and-white ink give the animation a perfect aesthetic. Stories of state-sanctioned executions, war and emigration are mixed with feelings of alienation and double-consciousness, all escaping that cinematic tyranny: cliché.
