La Peau douce
François Truffaut’s beautifully observed account of an extra-marital affair between a successful writer and an air stewardess.
Jean Desailly, Françoise Dorleac, Nelly Bénédetti
France-Italy 1964. 113min
One of Truffaut’s finest achievements, this drama chronicles the extra-marital affair between a successful writer and an air stewardess, observing its progress first with a wonderfully dry wit, then with an unsettling sense of things going seriously out of control. In the perfectly paced storytelling, the careful compositions and, especially, the exact editing, the influence of Truffaut’s hero Hitchcock can be discerned.
