Steiger received an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA for his towering performance as a Holocaust survivor, now running a pawnshop in New York. His experiences have left him a hollow, emotionless, bitter and dour misanthrope, unable to grapple with his trauma. The film also saw debuts for Quincy Jones as composer and actor Morgan Freeman.
