This powerful anti-war film, inspired by true events, follows a French army officer (Douglas) defending three soldiers against a charge of cowardice in the trenches of WWI. Using black and white to create a further sense of bleakness, and masterful tracking shots to reinforce a sense of impending doom, Kubrick shines a light on the hypocrisy of the military and the powerless men they have control over.
