Dee Rees’ stunning directorial debut, which expands on her acclaimed homonymous 2011 short, is a moving portrait of late-teens Black lesbian Brooklynite Alike. It charts her journey into adulthood as she faces up to the expectations of her conservative family and her own feelings about her identity and attempts to define herself in a hostile world. There will be a discussion following the film, hosted by Tara Brown (they/them) film programmer and critic.
Contains strong language, sex references, discrimination, domestic abuse.
