A year after Rome, Open City, Rossellini resumes his reflection on the brutality of war. Co-written by Fellini, Paisà’s six episodes follow the advance of the Allies in the peninsula, from Sicily to the Po Delta, bringing into focus a polyphonic portrait of Italy. Stories are shown in their raw violence, reaching a crescendo in the stark tragedy of the final episode, one of the greatest sequences in cinema.
