A sultry and salt-of-the-earth adaptation of James M. Cain’s noir novel The Postman Always Rings Twice, this classic adultery and murder tale flouted the conventions of Mussolini’s Italy with its defiant depiction of sexuality and sin. ‘Steeped in the air of death and sperm,’ is how writer and collaborator Giuseppe De Santis described the spirit of Visconti’s directorial feature debut.
