Pomme (Mairesse) recognises her old schoolfriend Suzanne (Liotard) in a photograph in a gallery, prompting her to reconnect and help her out of a fix. Though their lives drift apart – with Pomme becoming a singer and Suzanne a community worker – their friendship remains. Set against the backdrop of the Women’s Liberation Movement of 1970s France, Varda’s film is a poignant exploration of a longstanding friendship, and the inner lives of women.
