Akerman’s take on that most Parisian of genres, a ménage-à-trois romance, is infused with her signature enthrallment with cities at night, with desire, and with her own jilted experiences that echo those of Jack in the film – a night-time taxi driver whose live-in partner Julie is having an affair with his daytime counterpart. Julie is possibly the most feminist of Akerman’s protagonists: a self-possessed woman in unwavering control of her own sexual freedom.
