Irving Rapper’s romantic melodrama sees repressed spinster Charlotte (Davis) escape the malign influence of her domineering mother when her psychiatrist (Rains) recommends a cruise, which proves transformative after an encounter with a married man (Henreid). The stars contribute their own magic, while Austrian-born Max Steiner – often dubbed the ‘father of film music’ – won his second Oscar® for the lush score, which he counted among his personal favourites.
