Bergman’s madcap comedy centres on a 1920s critic (Kulle) trying to get a scoop on a famous cellist by hanging out with the various women in the musician’s life. Playful reflections on art, life and love mix with satire, silent-comedy routines, absurdist farce, narrative experimentation and cheeky innuendo; it is also notable for being Bergman’s first film in (gorgeous) colour.
