Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni are blisteringly good as a couple facing the deterioration of their marriage.
Dir Michelangelo Antonioni
With Jeanne Moreau, Marcello Mastroianni, Monica Vitti
An afternoon and a night in the lives of a married couple: he’s a successful but blocked writer, she feels bored and unloved. A friend’s illness and a rare night out conspire to provoke a moral crisis. Visually, this is one of Antonioni’s most striking and sophisticated works; notice the play with shadows, reflections and frames within frames, which mirrors the measured study of filtered emotions.
