The work of Heinrich Böll provided the basis for Straub-Huillet’s first films. In Machorka-Muff, a former colonel of the Third Reich gloats of his easy lot in the new Federal Republic of Germany. The interrogation of Deutschland’s recent history continues in the wilfully disorienting Not Reconciled..., which shuttles between the authoritarian rule of the Kaiser and the 1950s boom years, discovering both the early underpinnings of Nazism and the aftermath of National Socialism in contemporary culture.
