This hymn to international solidarity features five WWI soldiers from different countries trapped together in no-man’s land. As they struggle with the language barrier, cultural and political tensions emerge; only the US soldier (played by Louis Douglas, the celebrated African-American dancer) is an inspired communicator. Apocalyptic imagery and Hanns Eisler’s bracing contrapuntal score powerfully evoke the hell of war.
