The Night of the Hunter
+ intro by Geoff Andrew, Programmer-at-large
Charles Laughton’s one-off directorial masterpiece is a powerful fable about good and evil, set in Depression-era America.
Dir Charles Laughton
With Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish, Shelley Winters, Billy Chapin
Charles Laughton’s only film as director is an idiosyncratic masterpiece, drawing on expressionist horror, Biblical parable and American pastoral to relate the story of two Depression-era children targeted by a murderous rogue preacher (Mitchum, utterly remarkable). Stanley Cortez’s stunning cinematography captures the strange, dreamlike atmosphere of Davis Grubb’s novel, while the performances have the forthright simplicity and power of myth.
