Blinded in a military exercise, a pianist (Malmsten) is so determined to be treated without pity that he remains oblivious to the feelings of a young woman (Zetterling) who becomes his helpmate in his convalescence. Adapted by Dagmar Edqvist from her own melodramatic novel, the film is far from uncritical of the musician’s proud egotism. Strong performances helped to bring Bergman his first commercial success.
